How to care for a chunky merino wool blanket

Everyday care: give the blanket a good shake now and then to remove dust and pet hair, and air it outside to refresh it. That is usually all it needs. No bleach, vinegar or fragrance.

Spills and marks: clean them straight away. Soak only the marked part in cold or room-temperature water (a mild wool soap is fine), squeeze gently – never rub or stir – and repeat until the mark is gone. Rinse, press the spot between two towels and let it dry flat.

Shedding: a new blanket sheds a little. In the first 2–3 weeks the loose fibres settle and the shedding stops on its own. Pull loose fluff off by hand in the direction of the wool; don't use a brush or comb.

Loose stitches: if a loop gets pulled out of shape, ease it back by hand or give the blanket a shake.

If you decide to wash it: washing in the bath or in the washing machine felts the unspun merino a little. The blanket stops shedding and becomes stronger for everyday use, but its look changes slightly and it becomes firmer. The machine felts it more than the bath. Washing can also make the blanket a little smaller: roughly 5% in the bath and up to about 15% in the machine.

Pick off loose bits first. Bath: lukewarm water, plain or with a mild wool soap; squeeze gently, don't rub, twist or wring; drain, then use a spin-only cycle at the slowest speed. Machine: the lowest temperature your machine has (20 °C / 68 °F or lower is best, 30 °C / 86 °F at most) and the slowest spin (400–600 rpm). Straight after washing, fluff the blanket back into shape – this matters a lot. See how we do it.

Drying: always flat. Never hang it (its weight stretches it) and never tumble dry (it felts unevenly).

FAQs

A little, at first. In the first 2–3 weeks the loose fibres settle and the shedding stops on its own. One wash stops it straight away, but washing felts the wool a little: the look changes slightly and the blanket becomes firmer (see Care & washing).

Yes, in the bath or in the washing machine on the coolest, slowest setting. Washing felts the wool a little: the blanket stops shedding and becomes more durable, but its look changes slightly and it becomes firmer. The machine felts it more than the bath, and the blanket can get a little smaller (roughly 5% in the bath, up to about 15% in the machine). Step-by-step instructions are in the Care & washing tab.

Our bed sizes cover the top of the mattress without hanging over the sides; for an overhang, choose the next size up. For a sofa, Throw S suits one person and Throw M or Large suit two. All sizes are in the Size guide tab.

Please don't leave toddlers, small children or pets alone with the blanket: the big loops can be pulled out, and small bits of yarn can come loose.

Screens show colours slightly differently. The colour can also vary a little between production batches; the difference is small and rarely noticeable. If you're unsure, ask us for a photo in daylight.

Yes, we can tie the blanket with a gift ribbon on request. We can't use outer gift boxes, because the parcel has to be packed for transport.

Yes. Tell us within 14 days of delivery that you want to return it, then send it back within 14 days. Return shipping is paid by you. Details are in our refund policy.
